The most powerful question to heal body image
I’m in an intensive training program for my Body Image and non-diet coaching certification.
I’m learning to be a more effective coach, and in the process, my own body image is improving – dramatically.
Even though I’ve been doing this work for years, my trainer and coaching supervisor asked me a question I’d never been asked.
What is your body for?
We are so used to thinking about how we look, how we feel, our health and well-being that we rarely stop and ask – but what is it for? What is its actual use?
When I examined this question, I started to see how I had been living as if my body was a vehicle for others to asses my worthiness. My value in the world. I believed my body belonged to those who judged it, so they could tell what kind of person I was.
None of this was conscious. But when I became conscious of it, I could change how I saw my body.
If it isn’t for others to judge me by, what is it for?
It is for me to experience life. Without my body, I can’t experience anything. It gives me the ability to think, feel, and take action. It even allowed me to grow other humans.
That changed the way I relate to my body. I don’t need to love it. I don’t need to change it. But my ability to take care of it, have a good working relationship with it, enjoy it, listen to it and be kind to it shifted. I don’t love it, I feel neutral and that, my friend, is so freeing. It’s the experience I had been yearning for, but couldn’t quite get to.
I want all women to replace the upset, shame, hatred and frustration they have with their bodies with neutrality, kindness and respect. That’s why I now ask all my clients the same question. What is your body for?
I would love to work with you, too. Here are some options to consider.
