A social media trick to boost unconcious body-confidence
Did you get the memo about how ‘social media’ plays a massive role in how we feel about ourselves – and of course how our kids feel about themselves?
You did right. Many a wise person has written as much.
But have you taken a moment to go through your socials and ‘curate’ them?
Let’s think about the messages we’re hearing about our bodies as a starting point. Have you stopped and really considered if what you’re looking at makes you feel a bit shit about your body, or whether what you’re engaging in makes you feel like you’ve won the frickin lottery?
This was a game-changer for me. Like, night and day.
I read a whole bunch of psychology around body image, particularly around the unconscious way messages in our social feeds subtly and not so subtly affect how we feel about ourselves. Curating your social media feed is one of the most common tools psychologists use to help people restore body image to a good place.
This is gold for when your teens start living on social media as well (this free Body Image Toolkit has a social media contract swipe file you can use to set up your teen to have a positive social media experience). You can teach them to curate their feed consciously and it can make a big difference.
Just recently, because my body is going through its second major hormonal change, I took out all the ‘oh you’re going through menopause, I can help you get back in shape’ bull shit. Those posts made me feel like my body was a BAD one that shouldn’t be changing. It made me feel like I had to somehow hold onto the body I had otherwise love, joy, acceptance would run screaming for less wrinkled terrain.
So I took each one of those arse wipe feeds and axed them.
I left the ones that came from the position of…your body is going through changes? Awesome, they all do. Here are some ways I can help you take-care of it so it feels respected like the incredible gift that it is.
Can you see the difference?
Take a moment now, my friend. If any messages you see today make you feel bad about the container you get about in, axe them.
Your socials. Your rules, right?
If on the other hand, you want to do deeper into living like bodies are amazing, you can always book a free 15 min chat to discuss how to experience your body as amazing (and demonstrate great body confidence to your children). I promise to help you kick those nasty internal body narratives to the curb.
