Being a leader for your family’s & community’s health & wellbeing
In this blog post, I’m going to take you through one very short exercise and tell you about one simple action that will help build the confidence to act like a leader for our family’s health and wellbeing and for our community.
Before we dive in, I want to talk about leadership in general. The thing about being a leader, it that it requires us to go first.
And just like being the first ones get up and dance at a concert, with all eyeballs on us, we don’t know if people will follow or not. We might end up out there on our own, feeling a bit foolish.
That’s why it’s scary.
But for the sake of our family’s and our community’s wellbeing, we need people to go first.
In my work, I’m The Body Confidence Coach. So why do I have something to say about going first?
My work requires me to go first every day. That’s because gaining body confidence requires going against a lot of ingrained health and wellness ‘truths’ and I’m one of the first to put my hand up and say, what we are currently doing doesn’t work, I’m doing something different.
I’m also out to help the people I serve to be the first in their families and communities. Sometimes the idea of doing something radically different to the rest of our friends and colleagues is too hard, and I 100% get that. I’m also here to support and encourage the ‘crazy’ ones, the ones who believe they just might change the world, because they, as we all know, are the ones who usually do.
This is all to say, I get the fear and I get what it takes to help people move past the fear of going first with all eyes on you.
So if you find yourself in that position, wanting to be a leader for your family and your community, here’s a one minute exercise you can do that will ground you, presence you and allow you to step away from that fear into a place of confidence and power.
Put your hand on your heart for a moment…
Feel your heart beating…
Become aware that you can’t feel your heart in the past or the future – the only place you can feel it is now.
Also, notice that your heart doesn’t need you to ask it to beat, it just beats, every second of every day, for you and you alone.
Because you won the lottery. You are alive. You are here, getting to experience this thing called life.
Send a little thanks down to your heart.
Take a deep breath, bring your hand down and get on with your day.
Whenever you feel anxiety or fear or the desire to give up, you can spend a moment with your heart. See what happens.
The second way I want to boost your confidence to lead, is for your family’s wellbeing. I think it’s really important in these uncertain times.
All parents want their kids to be happy and healthy and one thing that many tell me is that mealtimes in their households has become a battlefield. They are so busy trying to get the right nutrition into their kids, all else has fallen away.
It can be so darn frustrating, and thankfully so avoidable.
And… leading your family into a peaceful mealtime is more important now than ever. If you’re already got your kids at home full time, knowing that mealtimes are a lovely place is a win/win for everyone.
Here’s a link to a blog post that will move you one step closer to that kind of peace and harmony. It will suggest you act a little differently to a lot of common health and wellbeing info. That might be scary, but it will reap rewards. You’ll be showing great leadership by being the one that helps the dinner table become a happy, healthy place that everyone enjoys.
Go be a great leader. I’ll be offering more ideas on how to build your confidence to lead and to ‘be the first’ when it comes to the health and wellbeing of your family (particularly where it how we talk and act about bodies is concerned) over the next few weeks. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
